Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans calls for referendum on Europe

IN the wake of disastrous results for Labour in the recent Euro elections, Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has called for a public referendum on Britain's future place in Europe.

He is calling on the Government "to recognise the force of public opinion and allow a referendum on the EU constitution contained in the Treaty of Lisbon."

Voter turnout in the Ribble Valley for the European elections was 39.7% and 65% of those who voted did so for parties opposed to the formation of a European superstate and the Lisbon Treaty, with more than 40% voting Conservative.

Mr Evans commented: "The Conservatives see the EU as a group of sovereign national states co-operating economically, making the key decsions in foreign policy, tax, spending and defence. The treaty of Lisbon is, in all but name, the rejected EU constitution supported by those who want a European superstate and wish to pass more power to Brussels.

"Gordon Brown, if he is allowed to do so, will ratify this treaty, passing even more powers to an undemocratically elected commission, contrary to the clearly stated wishes of the British people.

"The only thing that can prevent the Lisbon Treaty becoming law is if Ireland, Poland or the Czech Republic reject it in a referendum. We do not want to put the future governance of Britain in the hands of other nation's voters. British people want the same right to determine how they are governed as other EU nationals."

Mr Evans continued: "The Conservatives will seek an opportunity to introduce into the House of Commons a Bill to allow the country to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. The Government will be pressed to adopt it.To date both the Liberal Democrats and Labour, supporters of the European superstate, have rejected a referendum.

"It is time for them to listen to the public and for the Prime Minister to either call an immediate General Election and let the public decide if they want such a referendum, or call one themselves.

"If a Conservative government is elected before Britain ratifies the treaty, it will hold an immediate referundum on the Lisbon Treaty."
