A feature of Clitheroe’s street scene for many a long year is no more.
Beryl Taylor, proprietor of The Craft Studio, in Shawbridge Street, captured for posterity the moment on November 13th when the traditional red telephone box was finally removed from outside her shop.
It is a scene mirrored across the country as fewer and fewer of us use the iconic public call boxes, rendered almost obsolete by the mobile phones in our pockets.
Progress perhaps, but a sad day still when you think of how many hurried goodbyes have been hastened by its beeps, how many alarms have been raised from within its iron and glass walls, and how many long distance lovers have whispered sweet nothings into its receiver.
As Beryl herself put it... going... going... gone.
