Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans yesterday spoke in the House of Commons on the issue of school transport charges.

Mr Evans said: “Local authorities have discretion to give payments to parents for free transport, but they are increasingly refusing to do so. This is discriminating against many parents who are now having to find hundreds of pounds. If they have two children attending school more than three miles away they could end up paying more than £1,000. Please may we have a debate on this issue to ensure that we can remove such discrimination against parents?”

Speaking after the debate Mr Evans said: “This is an issue I have campaigned on previously and I will continue to do so until parents receive a fair deal from Lancashire County Council. It cannot be right that parents’ freedom of choice as to where their children are educated is impacted on by this policy.

“The Ribble Valley is a rural area and children often have to travel large distances to get to school, so they and their parents should receive the proper support from the local authority.”
