MP backs calls for badger culling in TB battle

RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has called for badger culling to be included as part of plans to tackle Bovine TB.

Mr Evans urged Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP to include measures for culling the animals when he announces his decision on tackling Bovine TB.

This follows a leaked document from DEFRA indicating there would be no badger culling measures.

Mr Evans said: "Bovine Tuberculosis is devastating for the farming families whose lives and businesses are being ruined by TB in cattle. We need a clear strategy and firm action from the Government. I truly hope the Secretary of State will not duck his responsibility.

"UK farming has been terribly affected by Bovine TB: last year we lost 28,000 cattle, and 13,500 cattle were lost in the first four months of this year alone.

"The National Farmers' Union have said that a negative decision on badger culling would condemn tens of thousands more cattle to death, and thousands of badgers in areas currently free of TB. They have said it would be nothing short of a disaster. I agree."
