More than 1,000 Clitheroe residents sign petitions to stop new homes
PEOPLE power is cracking the foundations of plans for more than 1,000 new homes in Clitheroe.
In two weeks, Clitheroe Residents Action Group has achieved its objective of collecting more than 600 signatures in an online petition, triggering a full meeting of Ribble Valley Borough Council to discuss new housing proposals for the town.
The online petition will remains open until next Monday so there is still time to sign it.
In today’s vote we’re asking can people power halt these plans for new homes? Vote (right)
As part of its draft Core Strategy – a long-term blueprint to guide development until 2028 – the borough council would allow up to 1,115 new houses to be built at sites in Clitheroe, out of around 3,000 which could be built across the borough. CRAG’s objection to this strategy will now be heard by all borough councillors, not just those on the planning and development committee.
Most of the new houses proposed for Clitheroe (1,040) would be concentrated on a new estate on land owned by Standen Estates at the southern edge of town. A further 75 houses could be sited elsewhere in town.
This means Clitheroe would be expected to absorb a large part of the remaining potential housing development in the Ribble Valley up to 2028.
CRAG has been asking Clitheronians to sign a petition requesting the council think again.
A spokesman told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times: “We want the council to distribute these houses fairly. The population of Clitheroe makes up 25% of the total Ribble Valley population and therefore it is unfair Clitheroe should be expected to accept more than 25% of any new housing developments.
“The response to the e-petition has been amazing, with more than 700 signatures collected in just two weeks. We are aware there are still many people wishing to indicate their objection to the excessive housing numbers proposed for Clitheroe and we have also started a paper-based petition.
“This started last Saturday and the joint petitions now have in excess of 1,000 signatures. Clitheroe residents should be applauded for their willingness to object to this unfair proposal. There are some very unhappy people out there and RVBC needs to listen to their objections.”
The online petition can be found at www.feedbackonline.org.uk/petition/5919 and remains open until February 20th.
Meanwhile CRAG is appealing for others to join its campaign. The group’s spokesman added: “We are a small group, so if you can help by collecting signatures in town, at work, in the pub, from your neighbours or any other Clitheroe venue please ring 07730 411556 to indicate your interest.
“We aim to make RVBC aware of Clitheroe residents’ anger regarding this matter and all the assistance we can get, will help achieve this.”

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 02:43 PMIf the council and government want to build new houses nothing will stop them, no matter how many people are against it and for what ever reasons. I am a Whalleyite and know that no matter what locals and newcomers think or feel in the end it all comes down to money. If there is money to be made it will go ahead And, in a few years when the houses are built and the people who were against them have moved into them, then sold them for a profit no body will remember wheat it looked like before and the younger generations won't care - we have short memories! I am forever meeting people from Whalley I know have moved into the area for its kudos and when asked where in Whalley they live state proudly "Calderstones Park" - Have they any idea how long and hard we fought not to have this housing estate built? How much the whole plan was despised by the local residents? No! They even had the gall to complain when plans were submitted to build more houses on their lovely green, the green that had had plans on it on the original plans! So no - I don't think people power ever makes a difference anywhere! We really are just puppets on the end of financial strings.
