Bomb squad experts were called to Pendle Hill after a walker stumbled across an unexploded device.
The bomb alert came after the man discovered the suspicious device on a remote patch of farmland near Sabden on Saturday morning.
Police were called to the scene off Wesley Street around 11am and inspected the bomb and carried out a search of the surrounding land.
Bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistics Corps were drafted in to deal with the device which is believed to be from the Second World War.
The area was sealed off as two technicians from the military unit wired up the unexploded ordinance ready for safe detonation.
A controlled explosion was safely carried out around 4-30pm.
