Stonyhurst College's 'demon barber' is great slice of theatre!
A BLOODSOAKED tale of bitter hatred and sweet revenge kept audiences entertained when Stonyhurst College staged its annual production.
Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical version of "Sweeney Todd" was not an obvious choice, but it proved a good one as the talented young cast carried it off with skill beyond their years.
David Mann (17), from Hurst Green, was a darkly menacing "Demon Barber of Fleet Street", who returns to London after 15 years' transportation on false charges and vows revenge. His grisly throat-cutting activities were lightened by a hilarious Mrs Lovett, brilliantly played by Natalie Crouch (17), also from Hurst Green, and the entire cast acted and sang with energy and aplomb.
An excellent set, lighting and costumes all created a macabre corner of Victorian England. The show's Director, Miss Johanna Egar, Head of Theatre Studies at Stonyhurst, said: "They've all worked very hard and I'm very proud of them all."
Lots of local residents, as well as parents and fellow pupils, turned out to see the musical, staged at the Hurst Green college over three days.
