Ribblesdale School’s amazing sports teams!

AS the New Year beckons, Ribblesdale School can proudly look back on a fantastic 20111 in terms of their sporting achievements.

The Queens Road school has shown great prowess in a variety of sports both locally and nationally, with arguably the pick of the bunch being the Under 16 Boys’ Skiing team.

The team, consisting of Callum Witts, Morgan Cooper, Will Glover and Daniel Culshaw (pictured, bottom right) competed in the Age Group Championships at Stoke in September, and out of 200 teams competing, qualified for the English Schools’ Finals in October, also at Stoke Ski Centre.

To reach the National Finals is an achievement in itself, but the team are worth special praise for their efforts to secure a second place finish against some strong opposition.

This meant that they also qualified for the British Championships, held in Edinburgh in November, where they finished 15th, which is an excellent achievement in their first year of competing.

The English Schools Ski Association is planning to send a team to the World Schools’ Championships, and are holding three training camps on snow.

Witts has been selected to attend the one in Geilo, Norway in February, which is an outstanding achievement.

Elswehere, netball has been another area of success.

The school’s Year 11 Netball team were crowned champions in the Ribble Valley and Hyndburn tournament - an achievement matched by the Year 9 side, who are unbeaten in the Ribble Valley and Hyndburn League so far.

The Under 14s Netball team impressed regionally, as they won the National Schools’ Netball tournament Lancashire Stage and now go through to represent the county in the North West Stage.

In athletics, the school shone inside and out.

In the area Indoor Athletics competitionn, the Year 7 Girls finished in second place, with the Year 7 Boys and Year 8 Girls claiming bronze in third.,

And over the Cross Country course, the Year 7 team were declared winners, while Ribblesdale were overall Boys’ winners, and the combined Girls and Boys’ team finished in third place.

The schools’ football teams have also won a strong of prizes.

The Year 7 side are Ribble Valley and Hyndburn 7a-side champions, reached the quarter final of the Lancashire Cup, and are still in the English Schools’ Cup.

Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 are still in the Lancashire Cup, with Year 10 still in the English Cup.

All Teams are through to the Premier section of their league.

Meanwhile, the Under 13s Girls won the NPower Girls’ Cup first round and will now representing Burnley Football Club at the regionals.
