AN invitation from number 10 Downing Street was just one of the positive results of a project spearheaded by pupils from 10 Ribble Valley schools to raise awareness about Kenya-based charity The Solomon Project.

The “Raise Awareness for the Solomon Project”, the charity supported by The Grand in Clitheroe, was co-ordinated by The Grand’s Primary School Forum.

It culminated with a talent show which was held at The Grand in December with the schools between them raising £2,200.

As part of the project pupils from St Michael and St John’s RC Primary School at Clitheroe wrote to the Prime Minister David Cameron. Addressed to pupil Sophie Baird, a personal letter was sent back from Downing Street, via The Grand, inviting them to London to have their pictures taken in front of Number 10.

A further letter was received from the Department for International Development praising the children’s work.

The Grand’s Primary School co-ordinator Louise England said: “It was a phenomenal effort from the children – they were inspired by the whole event.

“For example, St Mary’s at Langho donated the ticket money raised from the school’s nativity play to The Solomon Project and the children at Pendle School made special piggy banks, donating £500.”

The winners of the Raise talent show were eight-year-old Millie Kiss and Melodie Yates (seven), from St Mary’s at Osbaldeston. They will get an opportunity to record their song in The Grand’s recording studio.
