Heavy snow closes Ribble Valley schools

MORE than 100 schools are closed throughout the county due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures including six in the Ribble Valley.

One of Clitheroe’s secondary schools – Ribblesdale High School – was closed on Monday as were St Mary’s RC Primary School at Sabden, Gisburn Primary School, Brennand’s Endowed Primary School at Slaidburn, Bolton-by-Bowland Primary School and Grindleton Primary School.

A message posted on Ribblesdale’s website said the closure was due to the large number of staff who found it difficult to get into school due to the adverse weather.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and for the delay in informing parents. A text message was sent out to parents at 8.05 a.m. The extent of staff absence only became evident when staff started travelling to school and hence the relative lateness of the decision.”

Meanwhile, local residents were warned on Tuesday that the adverse weather could affect Ribble Valley Borough Council’s bin collections.

A notice on the council’s website said that refuse and recycling collections were planned to continue as normal on Tuesday, but due to the weather conditions there may be problems getting access to some streets, particularly in more rural areas.

“The collection crews will assess each street and, if safe to do so, will continue with collection as normal,” the notice read.

It explained that as well as safety underfoot, the driver has to be sure that he can retain full control of the refuse collection vehicle. If the vehicle slides or becomes stuck it could potentially be unrecoverable and may block the road.

Residents were advised to put out their rubbish as normal and the crew would do their best to collect it.
