Hats on for the Whally Walk

editorial image

A BABE in arms at the very first Whalley Walk and Ridiculous Hat Competition could this year enjoy a well deserved hot toddy at the end of it.

The annual local tradition will celebrate it’s 18th birthday with this year’s event on Friday December 28th. It has become a familar and much-loved part of Christmas for many local families – and others from farther afield – who take part each year, many spending an hour or two relaxing in the cafés and pubs in Whalley after the walk.

Those taking part in this year’s Whalley Walk should meet at the village bus station at 10-15 p.m., with judging in the ever-popular Ridiculous Hat competition scheduled for 10-25.

The walk itself – a good opportunity to work off some of that festive over-indulgence – starts at 10-30, going via the golf course, Portfield, Read Old Bridge and Read Park to regroup at The Gamecock Inn between 11-45 and 12-15. Th walkers will then set off on the return leg via Whalley Nab, aiming to arrive back in Whalley around 1-30 p.m. to relax, eat, drink and be merry in the village’s many pubs and cafés.

Everyone is welcome – the more the merrier – and the walk is ideal for children and families. Dogs are also welcome providing they are kept under control. It is not a sponsored walk, just a fun and festive event, although there will be a collection at the end for The Bethany Project.
