Fabulous sculptures made from the packaging from Fairtrade products will form the centrepiece of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight campaign in Clitheroe, which begins next Monday.

It will encourage people to “go further” for Fairtrade and smallholder farmers in developing countries. Campaigners from the Clitheroe Fairtrade group will build a sculpture using the packaging during Fairtrade Fortnight, from February 25th to March 10th.

The work in progress will feature at the Fairtrade “Big Brew” event at the United Reformed Church on Moor Lane from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday March 2nd and the group is inviting members of the public to go along with their own recycled Fairtrade packaging to add to the sculpture! The completed work of art, together with sculptures created at local schools, will then be exhibited in the town at a later date.

Katy Holden, from the Clitheroe Fairtrade Group, explained: “Our sculpture will help show people the wonderful range of Fairtrade goods available and inspire people to buy more and businesses to stock more Fairtrade goods.

“We are taking a stand for the things we love and the people who grow them. Without our support smallholder farmers in developing countries face an uncertain future.”

Clitheroe sculpture will join thousands of others being made around the country during Fairtrade Fortnight.

With more than 4,500 products to choose from, buying a Fairtrade product couldn’t be easier. Fairtrade Fortnight is the highlight of the year for thousands of Fairtrade campaigners up and down the country. For the next two weeks, shoppers, businesses, supermarkets, high street retailers, community groups, schools, colleges and universities, and even whole towns, will be spreading the word about Fairtrade by hosting producers events, bake-offs, tea parties and coffee mornings using Fairtrade ingredients; asking their places of work to offer Fairtrade beverages or encouraging their friends and family to switch to Fairtrade.
