Clitheroe woman claimed £10,000 benefits while working

A CLITHEROE woman continued to claim benefits after she got a job at a film rental shop.

Blackburn magistrates heard 45-year-old Teresa Ann Waterhouse received more than £10,000 in housing benefit, council tax benefit and incapacity benefit.

Waterhouse, of Littlemoor View, pleaded guilty to failing to notify a change of circumstances. She was made subject to community supervision for 15 months and ordered to pay £85 in costs.

Miss Parveen Akhtar (prosecuting) said the overpayment of £10,434 was made over a 20-month period. She said the local authority offices from where the housing and council tax benefits were administered was only a minute away from where Waterhouse was working.

Mr Imran Hussain (defending) said Waterhouse was born in America and had come to the UK with her former husband in 1998. He said Waterhouse was still married at the time she made what had been a legitimate claim.

“She went through a long, acrimonious divorce which caused her considerable emotional stress,” said Mr Hussain. “She hasn’t lived an extravagant lifestyle and has actually struggled to make ends meet.”
