A 21-YEAR-OLD Burnley student has denied sending “grossly offensive” messages to former Premier League star Stan Collymore on Twitter.

Joshua Cryer, of Coal Clough Lane, appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today to face the one charge of contravening section 127 of the Communications Act against the ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa footballer.

Mr Cryer, who studies law at Newcastle University and lives in the up-market Jesmond area of the city, denied sending messages in January that were “grossly offensive”.

Magistrates adjourned the case for a further hearing on April 2nd.

Mr Cryer was arrested last month after the 40-year-old former England striker reported the incident to Staffordshire Police, who passed the matter on to officers in Northumbria.

Mr Collymore, originally from Cannock, Staffordshire, now works as a broadcaster for Talksport and campaigns against racism.
