POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a woman in her 60s was seriously injured when she was struck by a car in Shawforth this morning.

The collision took place around 7.10am on Market Street at the junction with Oak Street when a Silver Toyota Corolla travelling north along Market Street towards Bacup has been involved in a collision with a pedestrian as she crossed the road.

The woman, who is from Shawforth, was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where she underwent emergency surgery for life threatening injuries. Her condition is currently described as critical. The driver of the car was uninjured.

Sergeant Gareth Hill from the Force Road Policing Unit said: “An investigation is underway but I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this incident or with any information that could assist with our investigation to contact Lancashire Police.

“Although there is no suggestion at this time that this collision is weather related, it has occurred on a freezing cold, dark morning so I would urge all road users to take extra care in these conditions.”

The road was closed for four hours to allow for accident investigation to take place.

Anyone with any information should call Lancashire Police on 101.

People with information can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at Crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
