£1.7m investment in Prom hotel

A HOTELIER who specialises in providing accommodation for the disabled has made a £1.7m addition to his burgeoning empire in order to meet demand for holidays on the Fylde coast.

Sean Atkinson, who already owns the 85-bedroom Bond Hotel on Bond Street, South Shore, has bought the 28-room St Annes Hotel, on South Promenade, St Annes.

He says he needs extra rooms in order to cope with demand from disabled people and their carers.

Mr Atkinson said: "We can't cope with the demand for rooms we have at the moment and we feel our customers need an alternative to the Bond itself. The St Annes Hotel is ready to walk into and it will just be business as usual for the guests who have bookings.

"We will also be holding parties and tea dances for the local community. There is a shortage of venues for the care homes. I think we are successful because our approach is very hands-on and family orientated."

All 14 staff at the St Annes Hotel have been retained.

It was relaunched to cater for guests with mobility problems when it was taken over by the Active8 Hotel Group in 2005.

Facilities also include a conference room, a sensory room and hydrotherapy pool.

Mr Atkinson said: "We genuinely care about our guests and get to know everybody during their holiday, as well as putting on good entertainment for them.

"I have got great confidence in tourism on the Fylde coast."

In October, Mr Atkinson secured planning permission to extend the Bond Hotel as part of a 14m scheme which will see it demolished in phases and rebuilt with 142 bedrooms.

That development has been put on hold but Mr Atkinson says it will still go ahead with the goal of completing it in 2012.

He also owns The Savoy Hotel in Douglas on the Isle of Man and is looking to buy a property in Llandudno in North Wales.
