A concert conducted by Gavin Sutherland will be a tribute to a champion of light music, Ernest Tomlinson, who died in June.

Following on from last year’s successful event the Light Music Society are once more putting on an orchestral concert in Longridge.

This year, the concert will be dedicated to the memory of local composer and conductor Ernest Tomlinson, who died on June 12th this year aged 90. His music is often aired on the BBC and Classic FM, particularly his popular miniature Little Serenade and movements from his Suite of English Folk Dances.

Classic FM presenter Catherine Bott devoted a whole evening concert to his works on the occasion of his 90th birthday in September 2014.

In 2012 he was honoured by tHE Queen with an MBE for services to music.

He was chairman of the Light Music Society from 1966 until 2009 when he became President.

The Library of Light Orchestral Music which he founded in 1984 contains around 50,000 pieces including many items, housed at the family farmhouse just outside Longridge.

The tribute concert is on Sunday August 30th at 7.30pm at Longridge Civic Hall and promises to be a feast of light orchestral music.

Conductor Gavin Sutherland, the current chairman of the Light Music Society, is an internationally acclaimed conductor and is Music Director of English National Ballet and a frequent guest conductor with such prestigious orchestras as the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra leader will be virtuoso violinist Geoffrey Allan, leader of Northern Ballet Sinfonia, and the orchestra is made up mainly of Light Music Society members, professional and semi-professional, several of whom will be travelling many miles to perform.

The programme will naturally include several pieces by Ernest Tomlinson, but also includes pieces by his friends and colleagues. Among the many gems are Richard Rodney Bennett’s waltz from the film “Murder on the Orient Express”, and pieces by Eric Coates, Haydn Wood, Robert Farnon and Ron Goodwin.

Tickets are £14 (£12 concessions, accompanied children £6) and are available from Longridge Post Office or from Hilary Ashton on 01200 427066, 07719205264 or hilaryjeanashton@gmail.com  Last year’s concert was a sell-out so immediate booking is advised.
