RIBBLE Valley residents are invited to take the plunge in a new fitness scheme making waves across the country.

Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe is to host Swimfit, which offers free online gym-style swimming programmes aimed at maintaining health, shaping up and toning, reaching peak fitness levels and swimming competitively.

Olympic medallists Samantha Murray and Jon Schofield took time out of their busy schedules to launch Swimfit, which is an effective way to get fit, by following motivating sessions delivered by qualified instructors.

Colin Winterbottom, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s leisure and sports development manager, said: “A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in half-an-hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an eight-mile run.”

“Swimming can support up to 90% of the body’s weight in the water, meaning those with disabilities, injuries or illnesses, such as arthritis, can also take part in sport in a comfortable and safe environment.

“We are delighted that modern pentathlete Samantha Murray, who has trained at Ribblesdale Pool, and canoeist Jon Schofield took time out of their busy schedules to help us launch the Swimfit scheme in Ribble Valley.

“Any residents inspired to follow in their footsteps are invited to come down to the pool and take the plunge for fitness.”

Swimming experts at the Amateur Swimming Association developed Swimfit, which is making waves across the country on the back of Team GB’s Olympic swimming success. Participants discuss their individual goals with instructors, before starting a personal pool workout programme based on different strokes and swimming tips.

Dedicated Swimfit sessions take place at Ribblesdale Pool from 8-45 to 9-30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. Sessions cost £3.60 and training cards and pool equipment are available for use.

Further details are available from Ribblesdale Pool on 01200 424825.
