A CLITHEROE man has proved he really is a tough guy after he took on a feared assault course in memory of his best friend.

Aaron Shread, of Bridge Court, Clitheroe, tackled the infamous Tough Guy challenge, in memory of his friend and ex-Royal Marine David Fairbrother (24), who died while serving in Afghanistan last year.

The 24-year-old, who works for the Media Village in Altham as a Production Director, completed the race in three hours 47 minutes and has nearly reached his target of £1,141 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, a charity close to David’s heart.

The gruelling endurance event took place at Perton, Wolverhampton, and saw contenders facing fire, water, mud, barbed wire and other obstacles in freezing temperatures.

Aaron said: “David loved competing in Tough Guy and did so on multiple occasions, once as a smurf and once in a mankini, so it seemed a fitting way to raise money for his favourite charity.

“Unfortunately at 18 stone I’m not quite the athlete David was, which made this a very tough challenge for me, but the memory of him spurred me and my friends on to finish. I completed eight miles through mud, submerged tunnels, ice, fire, broken glass, barbed wire and electric fences. It was tough!

“I want to thank everyone who has donated so far. I have managed to raise over £1,000 and have only got £74 left to raise to reach my fund-raising target, so if anyone can help please visit my Just Giving page.”
