Health professionals are urging Ribble Valley residents to be clear on cancer as two campaigns launch this summer.
Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust is raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer as part of the “Be Clear on Cancer” campaign.
The Communities Against Cancer team is urging people to get their symptoms checked by their GP as part of the national campaign which is aimed at people over 70.
The team is encouraging women to raise the topic of breast cancer with older relatives and friends while communicating the importance of TLC – Touch, Look and Check.
During the campaign, which runs from July 13th until September 6th, the team are encouraging women to tweet photos of themselves chatting with an older relative over a cup of tea, showing their support for discussing the importance of the TLC routine using the hashtag #chatTLC.
Coun. Mustafa Desai, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “One in three women who get breast cancer are over 70, so don’t assume you’re past it or dismiss any symptoms as a sign of ageing.
“The fact is women aged 70 and over are more likely to be diagnosed at a late stage, compared to younger women. “This latest Be Clear on Cancer campaign has an important role to play in helping increase symptom awareness levels, early diagnoses and, ultimately, survival rates.”
On August 1st, the team will have a stand at Beats Cancer Music Festival, which is a unique music event held at Clitheroe Castle that raises awareness for Cancer Research UK.
Meanwhile, throughout July, members of the public are also being encouraged to actively recognise the common signs and symptoms of lung cancer and get them check out early during Lung Cancer Awareness month.
It is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK and while it can affect people of all ages, it is more likely to occur in those aged over 50 and in people who smoke.
