The annual meeting of the electors of Longridge is to take place on Thursday May 12 and Longridge Town Council has issued an invitation for the public to attend and take part.

The council stresses that it is an opportunity for those with concerns, issues or comments to join the proceedings and have their say.

They feel this is an opportunity that has not been widely taken up at previous meetings.

At the meeting, which will be held in the Civic Hall and start at 7pm, Jan Ledward and Dr Dinesh Patel, chief officer and chairman respectively of the Greater Preston Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), will give a talk.

The meeting is two weeks before the local elections on May 26 when three prospective candidates have put forward their names for the vacancy on Longridge town council.

This occurred following the resignation in February of Coun Stuart Carefoot after seven years.

He has been formally thanked by the town council for his very valuable contributiomn and work on behalf of the community during his term as a councillor.

The three candidates for the May 26 election are all from Longridge.

They are Matthew Leach for the Labour Party, Joan Williams of Valley Road, standing for the Green Party, and Alan Odix, licensee at the Forrest Arms with no party allegiance.

Biographies and details of their reasons for standing will be given in next week’s News.

The election will take place between 7am and 10pm on May 26, and applications to register to vote must reach the electoral registration officer at the Ribble Valley council ofice by midnight on Tuesday, May 10.

Notices will be posted on the council notice board and in the windows of Station Buildings and the Heritage Centre. More information is available on Ribble Valley Council’s website.

To invoke the election following the casual vacancy following Coun Carefoot’s resignation, the borough’s returning officer had to receive at least 10 signatures from the electorate for the election to go ahead.
