Evans slams 'Big Brother' email database plans

RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Identity Fraud, has criticised reports that Home Office Ministers are considering creating a database costing £12 billion to hold the e-mails, phone records and Internet habits of everyone in Britain.

Lobby groups have voiced concerns such a database would turn Britain into a "stalker-state".

Speaking from Westminster, Mr Evans said: "These proposals are ludicrous. At the start of National Identity Fraud Awareness Week, I am amazed these reports have surfaced. Holding emails, phone records and Internet habits on one database is a recipe for disaster.

"People naturally disclose personal information in emails and when they shop online. This database will just allow for more breaches of personal information. People and businesses must be aware themselves of the dangers of ID Fraud but need support from the Government. Schemes like this merely serve to put the public at further risk of ID fraud.

"We should be using National Identity Fraud Awareness Week to promote the problems people can face not advertising proposals that will play directly into ID fraudsters' hands."
