Staff and pupils at Clitheroe’s St James’ CE Primary School have been celebrating following the birth of nine ducklings.
The mother duck had made her nest in the garden area, outside the school reception, several weeks ago before laying her eggs. And over the past few weeks staff, pupils, parents and visitors to the school have been keeping a close eye on her progress.
The mother duck looked after the eggs well with each of them hatching. When she was ready to leave the nest with her ducklings, the family were guided by staff around the infant school across the bridge into the junior playground. Year Five and Six pupils, who were on the playground at the time, stood back quietly watching as the ducks made their way to the school Ecozone situated behind the playground. Pupils were then able to follow and watch the duck and her ducklings enter the water into Mearley Brook where they all swam off together down stream.
