A TEAM of young chemists from Whalley’s Oakhill College had just the right elements to excel in a national competition.
“Top of the Bench” is a national contest run by the Royal Society of Chemistry for 14 to 16 year-old-students which involves testing their’ factual chemical knowledge and practical chemical problem solving skills as a team.
The Oakhill team of Reece Moore, Nathan Wenborn, Jonathan Tebb and Thomas Wright travelled to London for the final at Imperial College, to pit their wits against other super keen chemists.
Tension was high as the students headed off for the chemistry knowledge test in the morning, followed after lunch by the practical test in a proper undergraduate lab, tackling real chemical problems.
In the end Team Oakhill were just pipped at the post by one of the London schools who were obviously very experienced in the competition. The day was rounded off by a trip around the Science Museum and the whole event was a wonderful experience, which all the boys thoroughly enjoyed.
