As Top Gear fans flocked to Blackpool to catch a glimpse of Chris Evans and Matt le Blanc, one Longridge lad was in the thick of the action.

The Lancashire Wolverines American football team – inclusing Longridge’s Dan Dewhurst who plays right guard on the offensive line – took part in the motoring challenges.

The presenters had set up a series of stunts with a Land Rover and a Jeep in a battle Evans dubbed GB v USA.

They were seen having a tug of war, involving the Wolverines and Blackpool rugby team, the Scorpions, racing along the sands and driving down the Prom steps.

Dan described the whole experience as “great”.

He said: “We got cold and wet but it was worth doing. We got to meet Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc and they were both really nice.”

Dan, lives on Preston Road and works as an aircraft fitter at BAE Systems, having joined the company as an apprentice after leaving Longridge High School.

He joined the Wolverines after a friend suggested he might like American football and played with the Colts before moving up to the adult team. He heard through the Wolverines’ publicity officer that an opportunity to appear on TV might be coming up, and at a later date were told it would be Top Gear.

“I thought it would be good to represent the club and get on TV at the same time. I have always been a fan of Top Gear. A lot of people watch it. It is the highest watched show in the world,” said Dan.

Dan says they have been promised tickets for the episode of the show in which the Wolverines are due to appear and he is looking forward to seeing himself on TV.

The new series of Top Gear is due to start in May.
