A woman went on organised shoplifting trips with her troubled daughter as she was 'desperate' for her not to get caught and be sent to jail, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how one-time prolific crook Beverley George (50) and her daughter Leah George (27) went on two stealing expeditions, taking expensive, top quality gin and vodka from Booths in Clitheroe.

The thieving duo, who went with a BMW-driving male accomplice, stole Bombay Sapphire gin and Grey Goose vodka, worth a total of almost £300, on March 26th and March 30th. Leah George, who has alcohol and drugs habits, then drank the haul.

The hearing was told Beverley George, an ex-heroin addict, had agreed to go along with her co-defendant as Leah George was subject to a crown court suspended jail term for a drugs offence.

Their solicitor Trevor Grice told the court: “She knew her daughter was going out shoplifting. She didn’t want her to get caught as she knew if she was caught, it would trigger the suspended sentence order and she was desperate for her not to go to prison. She agreed on both occasions to assist her.”

The jobless defendants, of Sackville Street, Nelson, each admitted stealing vodka worth £74 and vodka and gin valued at £202.88.

Beverley George, who had 21 theft offences on her record, was fined £120, with a £20 victim surcharge and was told to pay £101.44 compensation. Leah George, in breach of the suspended sentence, was committed to Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced in June. The BMW driver was never located.
