Ribble Valley police and the Community Safety Partnership will host a free event offering shoppers free number plate screws as part of a drive to keep car-related crime to a minimum in the area.
The event will be held today at Sainsbury’s in Clitheroe from 12-30 to 4-30 pm and will see the police working with Ribble Valley Council, who will be on hand to fit the number plate screws to vehicles.
The special screws make it more difficult for thieves to steal registration plates, which are then used to commit crimes such as drive-offs from petrol stations.
Insp. Hassan Khan of Ribble Valley police said: “We have recently seen a rise in the number of registration plate thefts, so we would like to offer residents reassurance that we are aware that these crimes do happen and are taking preventative action. Tamper-proof screws are an extremely useful tool to help deter thieves and I hope that this initiative will help us to keep this crime from reoccurring.
“I would encourage anyone with concerns about this type of crime to come and get their number plate fitted with the screws free of charge.”
