A 36-YEAR-OLD man walked into a Clitheroe off-licence and stole four cans of lager in full view of the owner.

Blackburn magistrates heard William McCaughey was pursued by the shopkeeper who demanded the return of his property. But McCaughey refused and managed to drink one of the cans before he could be restrained with the help of a customer.

McCaughey, of Edisford Road, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to stealing four cans of Carlsberg Export from Mearleys newsagents and off-licence, in Woone Lane. He was fined £70 with £45 costs and £5 compensation and fined a further £70 for being in breach of a conditional discharge.
