Clitheroe Castle play equipment removed after vandals strike

A PIECE of play equipment has been missing from the grounds of Clitheroe Castle throughout the school summer holidays.

The space net, installed a decade ago, has disappeared because it has been vandalised "beyond repair".

Graham Jagger, the borough council's recently retired street scene manager, explained the costly net – which resembles a huge spider web – was bought as part of the original improvement scheme at the Clitheroe play area. He said: "It is part of the legacy of the first failed Lottery bid for the Castle ground improvement programme.

"In the past we have done some repairs to the net, but it is so complex you can't just replace a little bit of it. Now it has been vandalised beyond repair."

Mr Jagger said the net had to be taken down after an inspection.

"We decided to take it out before the start of the school holidays as it was too dangerous to stay," said Mr Jagger. He added the cost of repairing the equipment was as expensive as replacing it completely due to the intricate way it is put together. "The council has cut its spending on play equipment and can't afford to replace it. This is a very expensive piece of kit, but its play value is extremely high. The repair or replacement will have to wait until more funds are available," he added.
