A Ribble Valley teenager is all smiles after sailing through to winning a prestigious award.

Rachel Harnick, a member of Clitheroe Youth Forum, recently won the Lancashire Boys and Girls Club’s Senior Member of the Year Award 2014.

The 16-year-old gained recognition for her outstanding contribution helping junior members of the Forum complete a sailing project at the East Lancashire Sailing Club, Rishton. She also successfully took part in a Challenger Sailing Regatta over the summer where she was a member of a crew that sailed from Plymouth to Portsmouth.

Chairman of Clitheroe Youth Forum, Mel Diack MBE, praised Rachel’s achievement. He said: “She is an outstanding young person who has been with us for several years.

During this time having progressed from never having sailed to then helping coach our junior members as well as being selected to represent Lancashire Clubs on the Tall Ships programme, she dedicated herself to fund-raising for this and other club projects such as the quad biking, caving and fishing.”

He added: “Very much a team player and supportive of others, Rachel went through an extensive interview process as well judging her on county events. Every credit to her and her wonderful achievements.”
