Enough money to supply five lifesaving Shelterboxes has already been donated by the Rotary Club of Clitheroe in the wake of the Philippines typhoon disaster.

The local club is a long-time supporter of Shelterbox – a charity which sends the emergency boxes to wherever in the world they are needed after a crisis or disaster.

Each large green ShelterBox is tailored to suit whatever disaster it is sent to alleviate, but typically they contain a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, groundsheets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

After the Philippines disaster, Rotary Club of Clitheroe members – supported by fellow Rotarians from the Ribblesdale Club – held a street collection in Clitheroe, raising almost £3,000.

Howard Blackburn, spokesman for the Clitheroe Rotarians, said: “The funds raised have so far helped to buy five Shelterboxes and it is hoped that at least another one or two will follow.”

If anyone, or perhaps a local church group, school, business or other organisation, would like to contribute and help to provide much-needed disaster relief in the Philippines, contact Howard on 079770 42867.
