Clitheroe garden sharing scheme is blooming

A GARDEN sharing scheme co-ordinated by voluntary group Transition Town Clitheroe is growing from strength to strength.

Through the scheme, the group is hoping to bring together people who have a passion for home-grown food or a love of the outdoors.

TTC member Wendy Hamption explained there was a desperate shortage of available allotments in Clitheroe, with 125 people currently on the council's waiting list.

In order to address some of this demand, the group is hoping to match those desperate for some outside space with garden owners, who, for whatever reason, need an extra pair of hands.

"It's just about using the gardens we have," Wendy explained. "More people with gardens than own allotments have come forward, but a lot of these ordinary gardens have vegetable patches, too.

"Some of the owners have come forward as they are too busy working, are elderly and cannot manage their garden any more, but don't want to move house.

"We've also got someone who just wants someone else to garden with, as she's not confident enough to do it on her own."

Retired physiotherapist Wendy Douglas, of Station Road, Whalley, is one of the first members of TTC to sign up to the scheme and open her garden to others.

Fellow villager Patricia McNulty wanted to learn more about vegetable growing alongside her daughter, Emily, and now helps to look after Wendy's vegetable patch when she's on holiday.

Wendy explained: "It's a win-win situation, as Patricia is learning about vegetable growing and her daughter is learning about vegetables, too. She's already planted some spinach."

TTC is compiling a list of people who have spare land they are prepared to share.
