Celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Clitheroe’s Cricket and Bowling Club get under way this weekend.
A fun day will be held on Sunday (July 13th) at the club in Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, with a barbecue, tombola, plus player and non-player games to mark the milestone occasion.
The club was formed in 1864 and the then Mayor of Clitheroe was the president. At the launch, all members were treated to a round of beer to celebrate the green and gardens. Initially, a wooden hut was constructed until 1979, the bowl’s hut was made into an integral part of the pavilion and since then the membership has gone from strength to strength.
Club secretary Carol Hollis said: “In 1975 the first ladies’ game was held at the club, however, as some women were not wearing suitable footwear, they had to play barefoot!”
She added: “We are all delighted to be celebrating the cricket, bowling and tennis association’s 150th anniversary. Special thanks to Castle Cement, Dave from The Castle Pub and photographer Andrew Hale, for their contributions towards our special day on Sunday.”
