Clitheroe businessman's haunted castle bid
A BUSINESSMAN from Clitheroe is hoping to turn a ruined fairytale Welsh castle into a luxury psychic retreat.
Kevin Horkin, who owns the Spex chain of opticians, Ken Varey's Outdoor World and psychic management company Parallel Management, is currently in talks to buy Gwrych Castle at Abergele in North Wales, which is thought to be one of the country's most haunted buildings.
Mr Horkin is meeting with administrators with the view to buy the castle after its owner, Halifax-based Clayton Homes, went into administration last August.
"I've been looking for suitable properties for a spiritual retreat across the country for the past 18 months and this is in a fantastic location overlooking the sea," Mr Horkin explained.
At a recent auction, the Grade I listed building, which is set in 270 acres of land, failed to meet its reserve price of 1.8 million.
One of the first gothic-style faux castles to be erected in Europe, the castle, which has been derelict since 1985, occupies a commanding and prominent view of the North Wales Coast.
