The pair were believed to be targeting a cash machine at the garage in Whalley Road.

The helicopter and dog patrol unit, including German shepherd Bentley, were deployed to search for the two who made a failed bid to hide in nearby bushes and a stream.

A police spokeswoman said they had reports at 3.15am of someone breaking into the garage with a saw.

She said: “Superb team effort especially by helicopter and police dog Bentley resulted in two arrests after a ATM was targeted.

“They thought they were safe hiding in streams and bushes but the eyes in the sky supported by the ever willing dog patrol put an end to this game of hide and seek.”
