A BRAND new sporting and community facility in Grindleton is nearing completion.

Grindleton Pavilion will provide spacious changing facilities, an oak-beamed hall plus a community café when it opens at the end of November.

The £400,000 project has been part-funded by Sport England as part of the Olympic Legacy Fund, the Rural Development Programme for England and The Big Lottery. A magnificent £50,000 has also been raised by villagers.

Contractors John Moore are now putting the finishing touches to the stone building, which stands between the village football pitch and the children’s playground on Sawley Road, with wonderful views over the valley towards Pendle Hill.

A manager has also now been appointed to help make the most of the building and co-ordinate the opening of the café. Peter Norcliffe lives in the village and after retiring from business has been involved with a number of community projects in the area as a volunteer.

His role as Pavilion Manager will be to co-ordinate the launch and smooth running of the Community Café while encouraging and supporting existing volunteers (and seeking out new ones). He will also be responsible for marketing the Pavilion throughout the Ribble Valley as a premier venue for all manner of community activities, from senior citizen’s keep fit, through anniversary parties and dances, to major village events such as the Summer Bash and annual Wine Tasting.

Peter said: “The Pavilion is a wonderful building suitable for all sorts of events and I know it will play an integral part of life in Grindleton and beyond. It is open to all and we are keen to see an ambitious range of events and activities staged here.”

An Opening Weekend of events is being planned over November 24th and 25th to enable the public to step inside to see the facilities and enjoy the new space. The official opening ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday will be followed by afternoon teas and a children’s party with a circus workshop.

There will be fire dancers and fireworks after the sun has gone down, followed by a Fur and Feathers theme party for the adults. Tickets are £20 including a welcome cocktail and hot supper.

On Sunday November 25th there will be a Big Breakfast party from 10 a.m. with coffee and Sunday papers. This will be followed by a football match between Grindleton FC and Grindleton All Stars at 11 a.m.

Details of the opening weekend can be found on the village website (www.grindleton.org)
