Gary Cooper has run the kitchen at Pendle Club since its rebirth two-and-a-half years ago. Like all wise people, he has decided to retire while at the top, having started with a handful of customers and now regularly attracting 50 or so each Wednesday lunchtime.
Gary, who is now consort to Clitheroe’s recently installed Town Mayor – his wife Val – will not be disappearing from the scene, but will be visiting to talk to the gathering prior to the meal and ensure standards are being maintained. His old team is under no illusions of what is expected from them!
It was a fine achievement by Gary and Val to get the venture off the ground in October 2011. Not only are the customers grateful but also the kitchen staff, who get great pleasure from seeing elderly people enjoying a hot three-course meal each week and using Pendle Club as a location for a social activity.
Val, despite her busy role as Mayor for the coming municipal year, is continuing her work front of house and also continues to be the person at the focal point of the club.
It might be a hackneyed expression but, in Gary’s case, it is true... he is a legend in his own lunchtime.
