Charlie Bush is toasting success this week having been named Riverford Franchisee of the year 2014.

Charlie, from Gisburn, set up the Riverford franchise in East Lancashire two-and-a-half years ago. He now delivers fresh organic vegetables to more than 250 households a week throughout the Ribble Valley and further afield.

There are 70 Riverford franchisees up and down the country, all delivering award winning organic fruit, veg and meat to over 40,000 customers through their iconic vegboxes. Every year at the annual Riverford conference a franchisee is recognised for his or her efforts in sales, customer care, business practice and brand building.

“I’m delighted to win the award,” said Charlie, “it’s a great honour and makes all that hard work worthwhile.

“I know my customers are happy with me, but it’s great to know that those who have spent a lot of their lives building the company are happy with me too!

“The Riverford brand and heritage is important to me, I believe passionately about organic farming and want others to know the benefits that this farming practice can bring, both to the environment and to their homes.”

Business is flourishing for Charlie this year, as the organic industry is recovering quickly from the recession and confidence is high after new scientific research was released strengthening claims that organic food has significant nutritional benefits compared with conventional food.

Charlie added: “We’re thrilled to hear about this research. We have always known that organic food looks, feels and tastes different to conventionally produced crops that are generally pushed forward with synthetic fertilisers.

“It would be extraordinary if these clearly observable differences were not reflected in the nutritional value too, and it now seems that science is catching up with what has always been common sense to us.”

Riverford has also just been named Best Retailer at the Observer Ethical Awards 2014. Central to the company is the concept of giving local people the freshest possible seasonal fruit and veg at a price that is fair to both customers and growers. Customers get great value organic veg, delivered free to their door by the shortest possible route.
