A total of 2,148 sheep was the largest-ever entry of sheep with lambs at foot at Gisburn Auction Marts Anniversary show.

Anthony Thompson, Foulridge, dominated the ewes with lambs at foot section, when he sold the first part of this year’s annual consignment.

A packed ringside saw him have an outstanding trade his Beltex Texel shearlings with twin Beltex lambs at foot sold for £300 a family, while Mr Thompson’s Beltex shearlings with single lambs at foot sold to £290 a family, with numerous other pens from the same vendor selling from £240 to £280 a family. Taking them home were mainly East Yorkshire prime lamb producers.

Other vendors in the top flight were Harry Wood, Dutton, Longridge, at £250 for ewes with twins lambs and Nick Parker, Silsden, West Yorkshire who sold a great run of strong Texel shearlings with twins at £235. Overall a total of 45 lots achieved sale prices in excess of £200 a family.

Continental hoggs with lambs at foot attracted fantastic prices, with regular vendor John Stapleton, Skipton, North Yorks selling to purchasers far and wide to top at £270, to average £225 a family.

Father and son team, Raymond and Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe, Harrogate, dominated the Mule hoggs, selling to £258 with plenty of demand for other lots in the £200-£225 price bracket. Another established Mule hogg vendor was Donald Sunderland, Halton East, Skipton, with a pen of smart hoggs and strong lambs which sold to £202

With over 2,000 sheep forward, the sale of empty gimmer hoggs did not commence until early afternoon.

However, 50 strong Lonk hoggs from J. Howarth, Bacup, maintained buyers’ interest, with them being finally knocked down sold for £92. Gisburn Auction Marts next sale of sheep and lambs will be on Saturday May 18th, with the renowned hoggs with lambs at foot extravaganza show, described by auctioneer, Rachel Capstick as “simply the best show of hoggs and lambs in the north.”
