IT WAS a memorable day for a five-year-old sheep handler from Clitheroe who rubbed shoulders with royalty when he picked up a top agricultural prize.

William Burnop, who attends St Michael and St John Primary School, Clitheroe, has become the envy of his school friends after being presented the first prize in the Sheep Young Stock Handler category by Prince of Wales at the Great Yorkshire Show last week.

The youngster scooped the prestigious prize after he reared a Texel Cross Zwarbles lamb from birth. He was judged on the turnout and presentation of the sheep, the handler and how the sheep is handled.

His proud parents, Nicola and Michael say they are delighted with William’s win. “We are extremely proud of him for coming first in his class. William has attended the Great Yorkshire Show since he was eight weeks old! He showed for the first time in 2010 in the same class so this is his second year showing in the young stock handler category.

“William thought it was very nice to meet Prince Charles and he said he had asked him some nice questions and told him how well he had done.

Nicola added: “William’s father, Michael, shows mule gimmer lambs and British blue cattle for A. and K. M. Barnes at Cowden in Great Harwood, so we also took a British blue heifer of our own to the show.

“William’s lamb is out of his own small flock of sheep. He has haltered and trained it by himself and is already looking forward to his next show!”
