“PEOPLE Power” is the name of an energy-switching scheme that could save Ribble Valley households up to £250 per year.

The scheme, led by Lancashire councils, including Ribble Valley Borough Council, aims to combine the purchasing power of residents to cut the cost of heating and lighting. Households are invited to register their interest in the scheme by April 8th, with energy suppliers vying for their business on April 9th. Residents can register in person or over the phone at the Ribble Valley Borough Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe.

The more households that register for the scheme, the more attractive a proposition it becomes to utility firms, with potentially significant savings for the consumer. If just 15,000 households sign up they could save a hefty £3m. a year on their energy bills.

Household energy bills have increased by 40% since 2007 and further hikes in the future look likely.

Ribble Valley Borough Council’s housing officer John Barber said: “People Power is an excellent example of how local councils are working together to help people save money on their energy bills.

“I urge Ribble Valley households to sign up to the scheme, so that they can get the best possible deal from the energy companies.”

People Power is targeted at Lancashire households, although anyone outside the county can register. The scheme is also open to residents using pre-payment metres.

Registration is available at www.peoplepower.co.uk, or in person at the Ribble Valley Borough Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, or by phoning the council on 01200 425111.

You will need your energy usage to register and are under no obligation to switch your supplier after April 9th.
