Pentathlete and local girl Samantha Murray has set her sights firmly on the London 2012 Olympics – and with a little help from local firm Johnson Matthey she hopes her newly replenished sports kit will bring her extra luck.

Samantha (22), of West Bradford, is training hard for the modern pentathlon, an event comprising the five diverse and unrelated disciplines of fencing, 200m freestyle swimming, show jumping, shooting and running.

The pentathlon event was created by the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin.

It was his belief that the modern pentathlon above all others, would test the athlete’s moral qualities as much as their physical ability, producing an all-round sports person.

Not surprisingly, the kit associated with Pentathlon comes at a very high price and Samantha is very grateful for the help from Johnson Matthey, who have a plant in Clitheroe.

She said: “I’m so grateful to Johnson Matthey for their support and their interest in my pursuits as a local athlete.

“All the equipment that they have helped me to buy is crucial to my training and competition calendar in this exciting year.

“My first international competition for this season takes place at the end of February in Budapest .Then I’ll be going on to Charlotte, USA, for a world cup event and I can’t wait to wear all my new gear.”
