A CLITHEROE auction house is playing a pivotal role in the sale of mainly monumental and Gothic furniture from a historic Lancashire church.

On Friday, March 16th, Silverwoods will sell on site more than 100 as part of the contents of the presbytery of St Thomas of Canterbury and the English Martyrs Church, Preston.

Most of the contents of the building date back to the time when this popular local landmark Catholic Church, designed by Edward Pugin and extended and furnished by Pugin and Pugin, was completed in 1888.

Much of the furniture is in the Gothic style in oak and mahogany and includes a 19ft long oak wind-out dining table and several very imposing three and four part glazed bookcases up to 10ft in length and 8ft in height.

As well as the many monumental pieces of furniture, the sale features an unusual Dickens Desk with an estimate of £400 to £500, a large oak and walnut pedestal sideboard, an earlier imposing oak bookcase and a three-tier server made by A. Blain of Liverpool.

Other lots going under the hammer include dining, altar and library tables; dining, prayer and a wide range of other chairs; desks, sideboards and bedroom furniture, a Captain’s Chair and many other associated items of furniture.

The auction will also feature a selection of oil paintings on canvas depicting martyrs, saints and other religious scenes, six watercolour scenes by Preston artist Edwin Beattie, brass candlesticks and ornamental crucifixes and many other lots.

The sale items will be on view on Wednesday and Thursday March 14th and 15th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 18 Garstang Road, Preston. A catalogue will be available online at www.silverwoods.co.uk from February 27th.
