BURNLEY’S Charter Walk shopping centre is to undergo a major £3m. revamp – in time for Christmas.

Owner Addington Capital has received planning approval to redevelop and modernise the shopping centre and work is hoped to start in spring.

The Market Square will be completely changed with the first floor balcony and staircases outside River Island, WH Smith, Superdrug and Ryman’s removed and the existing shops replaced by three new double height units.

At least two of these businesses are expected to move elsewhere in Charter Walk.

In the square itself the landscaping will be improved and the circular cafe building demolished and replaced with a new glazed pod style cafe and kiosk with outside seating.

Alex Wagstaff of Addington Capital, the property investment and asset management company behind the scheme, said: “It is vital Charter Walk moves with the times to keep up with the changing retail market and habits of shoppers.

“The reconfigured shopping centre will provide modern retail accommodation for Burnley and we anticipate it will attract a number of high quality retailers to town.

“We are delighted to have had the plans approved and hope the improvements to Charter Walk will help to strengthen the town centre’s appeal, in turn increasing the attraction of Burnley as a retail destination.”

Centre bosses said this would “improve the visibility of retailers located in this area whose view is currently obscured by the existing building”.

Work is scheduled to begin later this year with the new units expected to be trading by Christmas. Charter Walk Shopping Centre comprises 365,000sq ft of retail floor space and 15,000 sq ft of office accommodation in addition to the markets and 737 car parking spaces. It attracts more than nine million customers a year and recent figures have shown it holds its own compared to other centres around the country in regard to the number of visitors and mix of shops.

Why spend 3 million pound to revamp a few stores when its still going to be surrounded by rubbish such as poundlands bargain stores, empty shops more card shops than clothes shops!! Sorry but they need to do a hell of alot more to entice businesses to the center and shoppers in!

Burnley centre used to be great on a Saturday..the grand Market Hall ,the stalls on the outdoor market, the smell of Black puddings and vinegar, The Odeon, Mecca ballroom, all the pubs..all gone. it's depressing now ,

As a resident of this once great Town for the last 57 Years, and seen all the mistakes that have been made in and around the Town centre, since the demolition of the old Market Hall..... Remember the one, the one that wasn't safe and needed to be pulled down because it was falling down, them when the demolition people moved in, they couldn't pull it down and had to resort to explosives? all we have had is blunder after blunder, no common sense at all, and I can see more on the horizon, with shope so expensive to rent that local retailers can't afford the rents, so we get bland national retailers, selling low end rusbbish, and more charity shops Why doesn't the Council do something daring, and re-build the centre like it used to be? vistorian buildings with character that will attract visitors, abandon the parking charges that also keep people out of Town...do something radical and attract people here

What about the development of the bottom end of the town centre. They've been talking about that for years but haven't backed it up with any action!!

Manchester City Centre and the Trafford Centre will be quaking in fear of the awesome competition and reputation of Burnley's Charter Walk. Once completed they will have to improve transport links with Burnley and massively increase car park spaces. Best wishes Charter Walk from House of Fraser (Kendals) in Manchester.

I'm really glad that this has got the go ahead. The shops that are on the balcony have no place in a big town shopping centre and I'm glad they're going, hopefully to be replaced with 3 excellent shops, although I hope a larger River Island is one. Saying that though, there are currently 6 empty shops in Charter Walk (including TJ's) and when JD moves into the old HMV there'll still be 6, not to mention Bon Marche and Emporio shutting soon!
