A CAMPAIGN to preserve part of the Clitheroe skyline has received a huge boost.
Last September, a fund-raising appeal to raise £250,000 was launched to rebuild the spire at Clitheroe Parish Church.
Now English Heritage has granted £142,000 towards the project.
The decision to save the spire, from 1848, was made by the Parochial Church Council last March.
Priest-in-charge the Rev. Andy Froud, said: “We are absolutely delighted with this award. It recognises the significance and beauty of this building.”
Mr Froud explained how, since launching the appeal, the church has raised 75% towards its target to begin the major work in April 2012.
He added: “In the next few weeks appeal envelopes will be delivered door-to-door to houses, which have a view of the church.
“Donations can be sent via the parish office at the St Mary’s Centre, Church Street. Cheques can be made payable to ‘PCC of St Mary Magdalene Clitheroe’ and the words ‘Spire Fund’ added to the top right hand of the cheque. We are grateful for anything.”
