FLASHBACK: Joseph Young in period clothes for 'Last Tango in Halifax'.

budding actor Joseph Young is aiming for a TV career – at the age of just 12!

The Ribchester lad has enjoyed brief appearances in the recent hit series “Last Tango in Halifax” starring Derek Jacobi, the Sky TV supernatural series “Bedlam” starring Will Young and a cinema advertisement for a Harry Potter Monster Book product.

Now he aims to follow in the footsteps of some of his Saturday stage school colleagues and win regular work in the North-West’s soaps and dramas.

Joseph’s parents, who live in Sarmatian Fold, admit they are not theatrical. Mum Lindsey is a podiatrist and dad Gary is a manager at Hanson Cement, Clitheroe.

They reckon Joseph must have inherited his creative streak from his grandma, Pat Jones, of Longridge, who writes children’s books and is a theatre fan.

Joseph, known as Joe to his pals, has been encouraged to develop his talent at his school, Oakhill College, Whalley.

Lindsey said: “His teachers at Oakhill told us he was quite good and became a different person when he was acting.”

His first role there was as one of the von Trapp children in “The Sound of Music” and he was the wizard in “The Wizard of Oz” last year.

In the final episode of “Last Tango in Halifax”, Joseph is seen pushing his bike up a hill in a scene filmed at Hebden Bridge where Derek Jacobi’s character was having a flashback to his childhood. He had to do it 10 times while the cameras rolled.

Now a second series has been commissioned, Joseph is hoping to be called on again.

Every Saturday Joseph travels to the Carol Godby Theatre Workshop in Bury, where many students and ex-students have appeared in “Coronation Street”, “Waterloo Road”, “Emmerdale” and “Hollyoaks”.

“Coronation Street” star Sam Aston helps out with classes and successful past students include Ralf Little, Vicky Binns, Helen Flannigan and Chris Fountain.

Mum Lindsay added: “He’d love a regular part in something like ‘Coronation Street’.”
