Sublime concert closes 2012

The highly acclaimed Kandinsky Piano Trio played for the final 2012 meeting of Clitheroe Concerts Society.
Celebrated cellist Alexei Sarkissov leads the group, with brilliant young pianist Tom Poster and internationally acclaimed violinist Yuri Zhislin making up the trio.
Their first piece for the eager Clitheroe audience was Mozart’s Trio in B-flat, a personal favourite of the composer. This was understandable as it was the first piano trio where the three instruments are playing together as equals.
The second piece before the interval was bound to create considerable discussion over the tea and biscuits! This was the piano trio by living English composer Anthony Payne, written in 1998. Intense and gripping, the challenge for the players was not only passages of difficult-to-play music, but the essential need for exact timing to create the blended sound essential for its success.
Played wonderfully, the audience reaction varied from “Superb, I wish they could play it again as an encore”, to “I was glad to hear it played , but ...”
As Tom Poster said: “The Schubert will take away the Payne!” This was a joke, but the final work of the concert could not have been more different. Although written at a stressful time, only a year before his death, Schubert’s B-flat major Trio is a good-natured, sunny, perky and tuneful piece of music. Perhaps the composer’s well-known ability to avoid responsibility and denying the inevitable was the reason for writing one of the most enjoyable and easily understood, but one of the very best pieces of music in the repertoire.
A very happy end to a memorable concert of the highest quality, combining sublime music with consummate musicianship.
