Lunchtime concerts in safe hands

Gaynor Sutcliffe shows John Travis her first programme of concerts starting in the New Year.

Knowle Green Village Hall, decorated for Christmas, was an appropriate setting for the final John and Elizabeth Travis concert – a celebration of 18 years of successful lunchtime concerts.

The music was provided by the Three Musikateers – Gaynor Sutcliffe, Robert Buller and Simon Brady. Gaynor played electric violin, keyboard and accordion, while Simon had several electric guitars and mandolins. Robert’s string bass provided the bassline and their music was varied, from swing, blues and bluegrass, with some classical pieces in one direction and George Formby in the other!

This reflected John’s concerts which were basically chamber music, but with occasional excursions into jazz and other genres. The trio were joined by concert pianist Philip Kubilius for the last piece.

After the concert there were many tributes to John and Elizabeth’s years of creating a club which anyone could join, listen to high quality music and have lunch amongst friends. Peter Grierson and Frank Winter had collected from the regular members of the audience and, in tune with the happy but slightly quirky theme, this turned out to be a giant sized cheque!

Tony Cooper, of Clitheroe Concerts Society, added that it was about time John and Elizabeth sat down to enjoy the music without the hard work of arranging it. His gift from the Society was Honorary Membership for both of them for the remainder of this season.

There was a final and totally unexpected twist when John announced that Gaynor Sutcliffe was taking over organising the Knowle Green lunchtime concerts! This had been agreed just two weeks previously and Gaynor had already arranged a season of seven concerts, with preview leaflets already available. An excellent lunch followed!
