AN art student from Clitheroe is hoping to revive Blackburn town centre with an “art trail” exhibition inspired by a trip to South Africa.

Kaart – an exhibition combining the work of artists and designers from both Cape Town and Lancashire – is the brainchild of University Centre at Blackburn College (UCBC) student Jessye Curtis along with fellow student Sophie Skellern.

Building on the college’s ongoing international relationship with educational institutions and businesses in Cape Town, Jessye and Sophie will be transforming the town’s empty shop venues into temporary exhibition spaces for 10 days.

The project is supported and funded by 02 Think Bigger, and will feature a mixture of photography, installation, sculpture, film, fine art and textiles, with inspiration drawn from the artists’ local communities, and first-hand experiences of the two cultures.

Jessye, who is studying BA (Hons) Fine Art (Integrated Media), said: “This is a really exciting project to be involved in and I hope everyone will enjoy the exhibition. It’s the second exhibition I have put together. It has been really challenging but I can’t wait to see it come together.”

The event will take place between March 1st and 10th. A preview event was held on Thursday starting at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and then following onto Sprout Café, Darwen Street, for some traditional African food, wine and live music. Trail maps can be collected from Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and Blackburn’s Visitors Centre. There will also be a range of workshops and activities on offer throughout the exhibition suitable for all ages.

Blackburn College Principal Ian Clinton said: “We offer a whole host of international trips all over the world and many students have benefitted both educationally and personally from these visits and the many experiences they offer. I’m delighted to see the students applying their experiences to make an impact in the town.”
