TRIBUTES have been paid to community stalwart Elizabeth Wrigley, who has died suddenly aged 62.

Elizabeth, known at Liz, was an active member of Downham Women’s Institute and Downham History Group, and was involved with the Stage Two Downham drama group at the Village Hall.

A volunteer for Clitheroe Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, she worked behind the scenes, prompting the cast during productions at Clitheroe Parish Hall.

A historian, she was also a member of the Friends of Lancashire Archive and the Red Rose Postcard Club which met at Broughton, and developed a booklet for tourists which is still on sale at Downham Post Office and Barrowford Heritage Centre.

Aside from her passion for history, Liz had many friends and was devoted to her family.

“Words cannot describe our pain, loss and devastation,” said Liz’s family. “Following Liz’s passing, we have had our eyes opened wider than we could ever have believed. Liz has obviously touched many hearts over the years, the number of letters and condolence cards we have received is phenomenal. There are some very moving and sincere comments. Many describe Liz’s wicked sense of humour, how she brightened a dull day, that she was popular and well liked and well respected and how she will be sadly missed.

“It makes us very proud of our mum, Liz, for all she has achieved and the joy she has cascaded to such a vast circle of people. Liz certainly led her life to the full and to say this is simply an understatement.”

Liz leaves her husband John, children Veronica and Martin, grandchildren Shannon and Jordan, brothers Wilf and Robert and many other family members.

A funeral was held last Thursday at St Leonard’s Church, Downham, followed by a burial at Christ Church, Chatburn.
